Red Wings announce they’ve re-signed ‘Teemu Pokemon’

The Detroit Red Wings social media team must be getting swept up in the Pokemon Go craze.

The Red Wings announced on Wednesday, they’ve re-signed forward Teemu Pulkkinen to a one-year contract. When they reported the news on Twitter, they accidentally posted they had re-signed “Teemu Pokemon.”

There’s part of me who believes this wasn’t an accident and the social media team in Detroit was just trying to capitalize on Pokemon Go’s popularity. The tweet was never deleted. I’d wager they knew what they were doing. The Red Wings sent out clarification about the error almost immediately.

The responses to the Tweet did produce some funny reactions. The Columbus Blue Jackets Twitter account, which is among the best in the league, asked the CP rating (combat point level) of Pulkkinen.

There was also this Photoshop job, that put Pulkkinen in the Pokemon Go game. Well done.

Some props needed to be given to the Red Wings social media team, as the initial ‘typo’ was retweeted over 750 times – which is way more than it would have been if the story was labeled correctly.

Detroit was having some fun at the expense of Pulkkinen’s Pokemon sounding name. Without knowing it, they might have given Pulkkinen a Pokemon related nickname. Perhaps, he’s the true Pulkkinen master.
