Stamkos to Tavares: “Watch what you do on Twitter”

Steven Stamkos has some apt advice for upcoming free agent and Ontario native John Tavares.

The Tampa Bay Lightning star was the subject of free agency rumors for all of last year, with Toronto media feasting on the idea the homegrown star would return to the Maple Leafs. Stamkos accidentally liked multiple tweets about a potential return to Toronto, which caused Leafs fans to speculate he was signing. Well, Stamkos signed a new contract with the Lightning early in the offseason, instantly squashing the hope of Toronto fans.

Stamkos told ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun that Tavares should be careful with what he does on Twitter.

“I just said to him, ‘Make sure you watch what you do on Twitter,’” Stamkos said with a chuckle this week. “That was my only advice. ‘Don’t stir the pot accidently. Be careful.”

It’s solid advice considering the frenzy Stamkos incidentally caused by clicking the wrong button.

I don’t think Tavares will be liking tweets any time soon, as he’s not an avid-tweeter nor a person that likes a ton of tweets. He’s liked 45 tweets since 2012 with his last like coming in February. The chances Tavares randomly likes a Leafs tweet seem slim. But, it’s happened with Stamkos, so the possibility shouldn’t be discounted.
