What should the new Las Vegas NHL team be called?

Las Vegas will officially have an NHL team beginning in the 2017-18 season. Bill Foley, the owner of the new Las Vegas franchise, has already stated he’d love for the team to use a black, gold and grey color scheme and potentially use the name Black Knights. Does that name still make sense now that the team is a reality?

Calling the team the Black Knights would be a tribute to West Point, but it doesn’t fit. It’s far too similar to the Kings and almost sounds like a poor imitation. Foley has also mentioned letting the fans choose the new name, so the PDL team decided to step in and offer some possibilities.

Here are the suggestions from the PDL team:

Aces

David Rogers

Let’s go with Aces. This might be the most obvious suggestion which combines sports and Vegas. It may not be the most creative, but then again the NHL isn’t that creative. It’s unique enough, yet a safe suggestion.

The Vegas team will need to take on an identity almost immediately, so what better way than to draw one of the most obvious connections?

Nordiques

Taylor Nigrelli

Why not be the ultimate trolls and call the new Vegas team the Nordiques? (EDITOR’S NOTE: You can direct your hate for Taylor at @Nigrelli93)

Aces / Sins / Gamblers

Liam McGuire

I’ve always liked the Black Aces, but that might carry a negative connotation. There’s a few that are fun and representative of Vegas like Sins or the Gamblers, but neither really sound like a hockey team. I’ll go with Aces if they pick a Vegas-themed name, but I wouldn’t be impartial if they selected a team name that was generic. Like the Tigers or something.

Rat Pack / Swingers

Sam Blazer

I really hope that they end up coming up with a name that is simultaneously Vegas and unique. A lot of generic names are being tossed about. What if they chose something off the board like Rat Pack or Swingers? Sure it isn’t the most marketable but it would be totally Vegas. I am sure they will do something simple and safe.

Aces / Strips / Flying Elvises / Mountain Bluebirds

John Coppinger

The Aces makes the most sense, for sure. And I agree they’ll go simple and safe. But wouldn’t it be the ultimate troll move if they call themselves the “Flying Elvises” or something? Then they can come up with something that looks like the Patriots logo and everybody will claim that this is part of some sort of illuminati conspiracy.

How about the Vegas Strips?

Also, it was just noted to me that the Mountain Bluebird is the Nevada state bird … in case the team wants to stay away from a gambling reference because it’s taboo. The Las Vegas Mountain Bluebirds would sure as heck be different.
