McDavid: “It’s tough to come into the league unless you’re Auston Matthews”

Hockey fans are still buzzing about Auston Matthews’ insane four-goal debut. After making the Senators look silly on multiple occasions, fans are wondering what’s next for Matthews as he continues in his first season in the NHL. For most rookies, life in the NHL looks like an adjustment. That hasn’t been the case for Matthews so far and many believe the best is yet to come.

Perhaps the individual with the best perspective on the situation is Connor McDavid, who also recently came up to the NHL and was immediately impressive.

McDavid has the highest of praise for Matthews:

That’s one hell of a comment from the captain of the Oilers.

Not only is he backing up the idea that Matthews is a step above everyone else, but he also refers to himself as a “normal” person. That’s an incredibly humble comment from one of the best youngsters in the NHL and it shows why the Oilers were ready to name him captain this early in his career.

Matthews made things look ridiculously easy in his first game, but it remains to be seen how he’ll hold up over the duration of the season. The bar is set high, but many – including McDavid – believe there’s no slowing Matthews.
