Report: NHL considering outdoor game at West Point

The NHL is reportedly considering adding another outdoor game to its schedule for the 2017-18 season and this one would take place at Michie Stadium located at West Point. The report from Elliotte Friedman suggests that the NHL may be discussing an outdoor game at the football stadium at West Point and it’s possible the new Vegas team will be one of the participants.

Florida played New Jersey at West Point on Saturday. At the World Cup, there was a rumour going around the NHL is considering an outdoor game at the football stadium.

The football stadium, Michie Stadium, is the home of the Army Black Knights and holds approximately 38,000 fans. It’s not the biggest venue, but its picturesque location has earned it such accolades as being named one of the top sporting venues of the 20th century by Sports Illustrated.

Who would compete in a game at West Point?

There are two franchises with ownership ties to the army that would undoubtedly want to play — Florida and Las Vegas.

The New York Rangers, New York Islanders and the New Jersey Devils may be participants due to the proximity, but the new Vegas team is the most logical participant given Bill Foley’s strong ties to West Point. The new Vegas team, which is expected to have an official name in November, could benefit from the publicity of an outdoor game against a big market team.

Outdoor games in the NHL have lost a lot of their luster, but this is one which could get a lot of buzz if the NHL plays its cards right.
