The Senators say “it doesn’t make sense” to make a trade with the Avalanche

The Colorado Avalanche are a popular team as the trade deadline approaches as they’re one of just a few clear sellers this season. Many teams have reached out to inquire about several players on the Avs’ roster, but to date no deals have come to fruition. The Ottawa Senators were one of those teams, but they’re now stepping away as there isn’t a deal which makes sense.

Via TSN (and transcribed by The Score), Senators GM Pierre Dorion revealed he has spoken to Joe Sakic, but he can’t envision his team making a trade.

Dorion:

“Joe (Sakic) and I talked and, at this point in time, I can’t see us going in that direction. It wouldn’t make sense. We want to do something to try to improve the team and making deals is very difficult to do. But I can’t see us mortgaging everything in the future and some stuff in the present to get one or two or whatever players that are out there. I think we have to be realistic that we want to improve but to give up three, four, or five assets would be something that would be very difficult to do.”

That’s a sensible approach from Dorion and one you’d expect to find from just about every NHL team. The Avs have some great talent they could move, but due to it once again being a seller’s market, they can demand a steep price. The Senators are in the thick of the hunt for the playoffs and could use a bit more talent, but giving up the future for what may not be enough for the Cup would be a tragic mistake.
