Sergei Fedorov reportedly lost all his NHL money when a friend deceived him

Sergei Fedorov’s playing days are over, but he’s still enjoying a successful career in hockey as the general manager of the KHL’s CSKA Moscow. Fedorov’s role as GM follows up a career in which the Russian skated in 1,248 NHL games and was considered one of the league’s best.

Fedorov left the NHL for the KHL ahead of the 2009-10 season and reportedly did so without any of his earnings from his time in the NHL in his pockets. That rough financial status was apparently due to a deceptive friend.

Details regarding what the friend did to deceive Fedorov weren’t reported, but it’s a safe assumption that it was some sort of business plan or financial advising gone poorly.

There’s no telling how much money the friend cost Fedorov, but he earned a huge amount during his time in the NHL.

Thankfully, Fedorov’s career in the KHL and now his current role as GM have placed him in a fine financial position. Had he suffered an injury upon returning to the KHL, this story could have had an ugly ending.

Unfortunately, these stories pop up more often than they should. Recently, Jack Johnson settled his bankruptcy issues after his family mismanaged his money. These cases should serve as a big reminder to all athletes in the sporting world – be careful with who manages your money.
