Video: Don Cherry calls Gerard Gallant firing the worst in the history of the world

Don Cherry has never been afraid to share his opinions and he didn’t hold back while discussing the Florida Panthers firing Gerard Gallant. The firing took the NHL by surprise and completed what many believe was the Panthers’ move to a more analytical system despite the fact Gallant was a Jack Adams finalist last season.

How did Cherry feel about the decision?

He wasn’t a fan, calling it the “worst firing in the history of the world.”

Let’s also take a moment to respect Cherry’s suit game. Now that’s holiday spirit.

Cherry points out that the way in which Gallant was fired was disrespectful following a 103-point season. Cherry also expresses his frustrations that Gallant was seemingly let go by a group which doesn’t know much about hockey. That claim probably won’t sit well with Florida’s front office.

Normally Cherry only makes headlines when he makes an outlandish comment. While his statement here is exaggerated (as most of his statements are), his overall sentiment is one that many would agree with. There have been a bunch of columns dissecting the decision (like this one, this one and this one) and most suggest it wasn’t a bright one.

It’s only a matter of time until Gallant finds a new role and it’s safe to assume that Cherry will be fully behind whichever teams brings Gallant on board.
