Don’t count Shane Doan among the group thinking the Coyotes got the better of the recent Martin Hanzal trade.

Doan appeared flustered during an interview between periods. The Coyotes captain and teammate of Hanzal’s for nearly a decade called the deal “really hard,” admitting “you can’t really replace him.”
Having trouble formulating a fully thought out response, Doan said “I just don’t get it.”
“The fact that we…. ah… continue to ah… to, you know… I don’t know. It’s hard to understand exactly. You understand when people’s hands are tied. I just don’t get it.”
Seriously? How does Doan not get it? As the captain of the Coyotes and the team’s longest-tenured player, he should, at the very least, know exactly where things stand in the organization.
Arizona is rebuilding and adding assets for the future. Sure, Hanzal was probably a great teammate, but it’s a GREAT trade for the Yotes. Getting a first-round pick, a second-round pick and another conditional second-round pick is about triple Hanzal’s value. You should do that deal 10 times out of 10.
Throwing shade at John Chayka doesn’t help anyone. Doan has a right to be frustrated with the situation, but airing his grievances won’t fix things.
The subject of trade rumors himself, Doan’s days with the Coyotes are likely numbered. For now, he’ll have to wait and watch Arizona tear things down more to build towards the future. A superstar isn’t walking through the door.
