The Wolfman, Juan Diaz, Hekkie Budler And The Rest Of The Week’s Boxing Schedule

The image accompanying this week’s schedule is not only quite funny, it’s topical too. The extremely hairy boxer pictured is Levan Ghvamichava, who headlines Tuesday’s PBC on Fox card. His nickname is “The Wolf” and, well, there’s not much more I can say. There are a few other cards happening around the place, though the only high-level action is at strawweight and not broadcast on US TV.

  • Sergey Lipinets vs Levan Ghvamichava, Tuesday, Fox Sports 1/Fox Deportes, Nice Calif. All jokes about the hirsute Ghvamichava aside, this junior welterweight bout promises to be quite fun. Both prospects like to come forward and throw punches. Ghvamichava holds his hands higher, which might be the difference when they start exchanging.
  • Juan Diaz vs Fernando Garcia, Saturday, UniMas, Houston. Former lightweight contender Diaz hasn’t had a meaningful fight since 2010 and this doesn’t change that. The spent husk of Mike Alvarado is also fighting on the card.
  • Hekkie Budler vs Byron Rojas, Saturday, Kempton Park South Africa. The world’s best strawweight, Hekkie Budler, faces a top-ten contender in Nicaragua’s Rojas. As previously mentioned, it’s not on US TV but it could be worth tracking down a stream if one is available and you like the lower weight classes.
