In some unfortunately dark news, one person was killed and two more injured after a crash during the Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix in New Jersey.

Via the Point Pleasant Patch:

One person was killed and two were severely injured while the Point Pleasant Beach Grand Prix race was getting underway on Sunday, according to reports.

The boat races have been canceled for the rest of the day following the crash, and News12 was told the crash happened near Bay Head during the small boat preliminary event.

Apparently two boats collided shortly after the race began. The crash happened in full view of spectators along the beach, many of whom were apparently (and understandably) shaken up at the scene:

News12 reported that people appeared somber as they heard the news while sitting on the boardwalks and the beaches.

That’s obviously horrible, and it’s somewhat surprising that powerboat fatalities aren’t more common, considering the speed and forces involved, as well as the need for immediate rescue, given the fact that drowning is in play as well.

Hopefully the two injured participants make a full recovery.
