Club America and Tigres UANL squared off in the Liga MX final last night on Christmas Day and the events that transpired made it one of the craziest and most bizarre championship games we can recall.

For a game that ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, you wouldn’t think there would be that much excitement or even moments that would be worth a passing mention. However, that could not be further from the truth as you’ll see by these highlights.

First this save by America goalie Moises Munoz…

Then this incredible miss from point blank range by America’s Oribe Peralta….

And then this moment, when Frenchman Andre-Pierre Gignac (the leading scorer in the Apertura championship playoff) hit the crossbar with just under 10 minutes to go before the end of normal time.

Tigres and America were playing in the second leg of the Apertura championship final after the two teams played to a 1-1 draw in the first leg. With the score tied 0-0 and no away goals tiebreaker, the game went into extra time. And that’s where business picked alllllll the way up.   After a Tigres player was sent off, America took the lead on a goal by Edson Alvarez.

AND THEN A HUGE FIGHT BROKE OUT!!!!

At the end of this scuffle at the conclusion of the first period of extra time, it finally ended with both teams having to play the final 15 minutes with 9 on 9 soccer. America had already lost a player to a second yellow card, evening the sides at 10 a piece. Jose Rivas of Tigres and Paolo Goltz of America were sent off for their parts in the brawl below. Additionally, unused America substitute Ventura Alvarado was also sent off, making it 5 red cards in total.

Are we done with the action yet? Hardly! Jesus Duenas leveled just before the 120th minute with this soaring header to take the game into penalties and send the Tigres fans into absolute delirium.

And the celebration… well, I don’t think I would be trying this one…

Of course, considering everything we’ve seen to this point, you know this wouldn’t be your normal shootout. Somehow, America did not score a single goal in the shootout! Not one! Tigres goalkeeper Nahuel Guzman saved all three penalties he faced, making a hat trick of saves with one diving to his left, one diving to his right, and one straight down the middle.

If one thing’s for sure after reading this, you need to be watching more Mexican league soccer.
