In an effort to help promote his latest film and return to the Jason Bourne saga, Matt Damon has been signed by a professional European soccer club, Atletico Madrid.

Damon will not be taking the pitch for the club, but he is now the proud owner of his own official team jersey, which was presented to him by team chairman Enrique Cerezo and left winger Filipe Luis at a promotional event in Madrid. Damon was already off to his next stop on his promotional tour for “Jason Bourne,” but let out a “Go Atleti” cheer on his way out the door.

Celebrities posting with team jerseys is always good for press, both for the actor and movie as well as the individual team. A little publicity for the movie and the team is a nice little public relations strategy that more teams should be attempting to setup. It is not as if sports leagues are not already heavy on the cross promotion technique. Anyone who has watched an NBA Finals or a Super Bowl can attest to that.

“Jason Bourne” is scheduled to be released in theaters on July 29.
