Cristiano Ronaldo during the UEFA EURO 2016 Final match between Portugal and France at Stade de France on July 10, 2016 in Paris, France.

Cristiano Ronaldo is one happy man after his Portugal side won the European Championships on Sunday, though Ronaldo was carried off on a stretcher after Dmitri Payet clattered into his knee. His sister Katia Aveiro, no doubt a huge Ronaldo fan, made an odd comparison of the talismanic Portuguese sensation and another famous figure from history: Jesus of Nazareth.

She says that his injury in the Final was like the crucifixion of Jesus… OK. What’s the justification for the comparison? From her Instagram:

“These tears I cried for my wounded brother were like daggers to the heart, and we all cried with him for the awful pain we had together.

“But God is great and just as our saviour Jesus Christ suffered on the cross for a better world for us, Cristiano cried in the pain of not being able to help his teammates and his beloved people.

“God is just and they deservedly lifted the trophy, and fulfilled the dream; we are champions.”

OK so it’s not a one-for-one comparison but “just as Jesus suffered, Cristiano suffered for his team” is a bit of a stretch. Portugal has had many great players in the past such as Eusebio, Luis Figo, Nuno Gomes et al, but none of them could bring Portugal an international title as Ronaldo has.

But comparing him to Jesus? That’s a bit of a stretch.
