The biggest storyline in this month’s Euro 2016 hasn’t been France’s home-field dominance or Wales’ coming-out party or Iceland’s Cinderella run. Without question, the most compelling thing to happen at the tournament has been German coach Joachim Low’s odd obsession with smelling himself.

This came to international attention two weeks ago, when Low was caught on camera sniffing his hand after sticking down his pants, both in front and back, during a game against Ukraine.

Then came Sunday’s game against Slovakia, and Low was at it again.

You know what’s weirder than smelling your own sweat? Smelling your own sweat in public with dozens of video cameras in the vicinity! You know what’s weirder than that? Smelling your own sweat after being mocked for doing exactly that for two weeks!

There’s really not a lot of nuance to this. Joachim Low is just weird. And even though we didn’t grasp the extent of his weirdness until recently, it’s been going on for a while.

Germany advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win Sunday, so if we’re lucky we’ll get three more matches of Low picking, scratching and smelling. Cameramen, prepare yourselves.
