By now, we’ve all seen the hideous Cristiano Ronaldo statue that doesn’t really portray the soccer superstar at all. It’s become so infamous that even Saturday Night Live has taken the time to mock it.
After quite some time, the horrific statue may no longer be the world’s worst. Instead, that title now belongs to this brutal depiction of former Chelsea star Michael Essien.

Wait what? They look NOTHING alike!
I mean that’s just not fair. It’s not even close.
Naturally, the Internet is having a field day going in on the horrible statue.

Maradona: Mine was worse!

This statue of Michael Essien in Ghana makes the Cristiano Ronaldo one look like the work of Leonardo da Vinci. pic.twitter.com/X9nWvU4p3F

Even though it’s only January 3rd, I don’t think we’re going to see a worse statue created this year.
Essien played for Chelsea, which somewhat helped identify him. But without the Chelsea kit, it’s possible nobody would ever recognize this statue as one of Essien, despite its placement in his home country of Ghana.
The 35-year old hasn’t made any public comments about the terrible statue of himself, but he did retweet the below tweet, which seems like it was borderline praise of the brutal statue.
Hello @MichaelEssien, I'm not sure you're aware of this your huge honour in Kumasi at that popular Boadi Road. Yesterday the sculpture opened the fence around it was and I saw kids & adults take turns to take pictures. I was humbled. Ghana still loves you. It's Beautiful gift pic.twitter.com/y1CItDP9qW

Beautiful gift? Yes. Beautiful statue? Absolutely not.
