In an effort to provide a cheaper alternative when flying to your destination, American Airlines is now offering an even more economical airfare option with its Basic Economy ticket. What comes with this new airfare option? A seat on the plane, which comes with a free seat belt!
They say you get what you pay for, and American Airlines is pretty much doing just that. The non-refundable tickets will not be eligible for any upgrades and passengers with a Basic Economy ticket will not be allowed to use the overhead bin. You’ll also be the last to board the plane. So pack lightly with your carry on or plan on packing everything you need in your checked baggage, which will likely be bounced back and forth and handled with extreme care by airline employees.
“Our goal is to make sure that all customers have the opportunity to purchase a ticket on American that works for their specific needs,” said American Airlines President Robert Isom, in a press release Wednesday.
The good news is the Basic Economy ticket will still entitle you to a free beverage and snack on your flight, and you can still enjoy the entertainment that may be on the plane, so it’s not a total loss. And if you are making a short trip and pack lightly, you may be perfectly happy with such an airfare option.
American Airlines is trying to find new ways to encourage people to fly with them, and making it as cheap as possible is one way to do that.
