File this one in the “whatever happened to that guy?” category.

For those of us who grew up with the internet growing up, there is no more iconic sound than the voice of America Online (AOL) and it’s mail notification voiceover that said “You’ve got mail.”

It was soooo cool for the time, and with the internet in its infancy for the masses, it was like the pings we get when messages arrive on our iPhones or iPads today.

But, as AOL declined in its importance as a service provider and e-mail house, the man behind the voice was likely out of his iconic job. After all, it wasn’t like they didn’t have his voice over on a loop already.

So, one unsuspecting Uber customer in Ohio got the surprise of her life when her driver turned out to be that guy behind the voice.

His name is Elwood Edwards, and before you think this is some impostor, here is a video of the very same man from back in 2012 talking about his life for AOL:

For a man who has one of the most iconic phrases in online history, Uber must be a pretty awesome way to spend retirement. I mean, what else is a guy going to do with all that free time, right?
