What’s old is new again in the mobile phone universe. And after five years, Verizon has announced they are bringing back unlimited data plans.

There are definitely some caveats to exactly determine what an “unlimited” data plan means but it does mean that Verizon finally joins competitors AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile in offering an unlimited plan.

Verizon unlimited plans start at $80/month for a single line but could go down to $45/month per line if there are four lines on the same plan and if enrolled in auto-billing. Obviously, the cost will be higher after fees, taxes and paying for the phone go into effect. To compare this with competitor’s plans, AT&T’s plan is $100/month only when bundled with either DirecTV or U-Verse. T-Mobile’s single line plan is $70/month not including add-ons like HD streaming. Sprint’s unlimited plan is $60/month. Like everyone else, Verizon will cut speeds after 22 gb and will prioritize those who are not over that limit.

A lack of an unlimited plan was definitely a target for Verizon’s competitors. All three went after Verizon in order to promote their unlimited plans. Most notably, T-Mobile had multiple commercials during the Super Bowl which involved some strange BDSM scenarios having to do with Verizon’s data limits.

For Verizon customers, it may be a good idea to switch over to an unlimited plan. While most people do only use a few gb’s per month, the difference between a 4 gb plan that’s $50/month and an unlimited plan with three other people that’s $45/month makes sense that one should find some friends or family members and combine together to not only save money but also be able to stream movies without being in danger of paying overage fees.
