Just two weeks ago, we had a story about Ben Affleck stepping down as the director of the upcoming Batman film, aptly titled The Batman. In an interview with Variety, Affleck cited the difficulty to both direct the film and play the role of Batman as his reasoning for leaving the directing responsibilities. But Affleck made it clear that he’s still committed to playing the role of Batman:
“There are certain characters who hold a special place in the hearts of millions,” Affleck said in a statement. “Performing this role demands focus, passion and the very best performance I can give. It has become clear that I cannot do both jobs to the level they require. Together with the studio, I have decided to find a partner in a director who will collaborate with me on this massive film. I am still in this, and we are making it, but we are currently looking for a director. I remain extremely committed to this project, and look forward to bringing this to life for fans around the world.”
However, now it sounds like Affleck doesn’t even want to be a part of the film at all. On Tuesday, Collider’s John Campea said — and he did say to “please take with this a massive, massive grain of salt” — that three sources have told him over the last four days that Affleck also wants to drop out of the role of Batman:
“Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he wants out. He doesn’t want to be Batman anymore.”
“I’ve been told that Affleck is talking with Warner Bros., in an attempt to get out of being Batman. And if they do not let him out of being Batman, the standalone film that ultimately happens will be the last time we see Affleck as Batman.”
So, that’s certainly interesting, and would very much go against what Affleck said two weeks ago. But, it wouldn’t be surprising either, as Batman v Superman was of course a huge disappointment, and Affleck may just want to be disconnected from the franchise going forward.
