Star Trek has been referenced in plenty of music, from Weird Al’s “White and Nerdy” (“Only question I ever thought was hard/Was do I like Kirk or do I like Picard?”) to The Beastie Boys’ “Ch-Ch-Check It Out” (“All you Klingons in your Grandma’s house…”) and “Intergalactic” (“Like a pinch on the neck of Mr. Spock “) and Eminem’s “We Made You” video. However, comics creator and film editor/director Jackson Lanzing has gone one step further, capitalizing on the success of the hip-hop musical Hamilton with a perfect rewrite and video of “My Shot,” now called “My Spock.” He mostly focuses on Spock’s role in J.J. Abrams’ 2009 movie reboot of Star Trek, and inserts some perfect clips from that, but also references other corners of the Trek universe:

This is far from the first hip-hop tribute to Spock over the years, but it’s one of the most detailed and comprehensive. The rhymes here work well, and also display a great level of Trek nerdery, from Chekov’s “wessels” to McCoy’s “I’m a doctor, not a ___.” Here are some of the best lines:

“Yo, my heart’s like my planet, a black hole of red granite.”

“His mastery of information was highly hypnotic/The problem: his emotional control is catastrophic.”

“It was the ST-AR-FL-E/ET, an alien surrounded by diversity, meanwhile humans be thinking so illogically.”

“He was never going to set his emotions free, so he designed the unbeatable test Kobayashi”

Kirk: “Yo, I’m a kid out of Kansas/I just like Beastie Boys and driving into crevasses.”

McCoy: “I’m a doc, what I’m not is some kind of crazy Indiana Jones/All I got left is my Bones.”

“Let’s tie this Romulan up tighter than a Gordian knot.”

Spock: “Surak teaches class, we don’t laugh or hug our dads, we just get that Pon Farr ass.”

This is terrific, and it shows a great love for both the Hamilton and Star Trek material. Expect to see more space stories from Lanzing, too; he’s currently working on a comic project called Joyride, which he described in January as “punk rock teenage Star Trek.” If it’s anywhere as good as this video, it should be a treat.
