The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel was a surprise success in the summer of 2012.
Thanks to an outstanding cast including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Maggie Smith and Dev Patel, a story about British retirees who move to what they believe is a luxury hotel in India, but is more of a work in progress grossed $46 million against a $10 million budget. (I thought it was just a hit in my town, which is heavily populated with retirees.) That sort of profit gets movie studios thinking sequel.
Sure enough, the gang is back together for The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. You can check out, but never leave. Here is the film’s trailer.
Director John Madden insisted to USA Today that this follow-up is not a sequel. “I think ‘sequel’ smacks of, ‘Hey, we made a good one, it worked, let’s do another one,'” Madden told Mark Lieberman. “It certainly isn’t the same movie again.”
Well… it sure seems like “it worked, let’s do another one” is exactly what’s happening here. But with Richard Gere added to the cast, and the characters all familiar with each other now, Madden could be right about this not being the same movie again. We’ll find out beginning on March 6, 2015.
