The offensively challenged San Diego Padres are…actually putting some runs on the board. The team put six runs on the board last night in Arizona, homering three time in a 6-2 win. The team homered three times last night, including the third for Yasmani Grandal in three games. Alexi Amarista, AKA "the guy that the Padres got for Ernesto Frieri" also hit his third homer in three games for the Padres. Maybe it's not all bad right now. Maybe it's not all terrible. I'd say that the Padres are in a better spot than the Rockies in the NL West, but they still have a ways to go before they contend in the division.
Game of the Night: Mariners 6, Orioles 3. This one smarts for Baltimore. They took a 3-1 lead in the fourth on a three-run homer by Chris Davis. That lead held untli the seventh, when gassed out Baltimore starter Jason Hammel allowed a bases loaded double to Casper Wells, clearing the bases and giving Seattle a 4-3 lead. Miguel Olivo and Dustin Ackley added back to back homers in the eighth to make it 6-3, and that's where the game ended up. The Orioles offense only had three hits for the game, two of which were by Davis. They didn't have a hit for the rest of the game after Davis's homer in the fourth. Oh bother…
Hitting Lines of the Night: In Pittsburgh's 11-2 drubbing of the Astros, their offense went bonkers. Garrett Jones went 4/5 with three runs, four RBI, a double, and a homer. Neil Walker went 2/4 with two runs, three RBI, a walk, a double, and a homer. And then, Andrew McCutchen (again). He went 4/5 with three runs, one RBI, and a double. Look at the Pirates offense! Allen Craig of the Cardinals went 2/4 with three RBI, a walk, and two homers in St Louis's 9-3 win over Colorado. Mike Moustakas of the Royals went 2/5 with five RBI, a double, and a grand slam for the Royals in their 11-3 win over the Blue Jays.
Pitching Lines of the Night: Jeff Samardzija was terrific for the Cubs against the Braves in their 4-1 win, going seven innings and allowing one run on four hits, walking one and striking out 11. Homer Bailey was good for the Reds in their 8-2 win over the struggling Dodgers, allowing two runs over eight innings on five hits, walking one and striking out seven.
Other Games: The Rays edged the Yankees 4-3. The Angels shut out the Indians 3-0. The Twins beat the Tigers 6-4. The Brewers edged the Marlins 6-5. The A's beat the Red Sox 6-1 thanks to former SAWX prospects Josh Reddick and Brandon Moss.
Today's Games: Full slate today, and only one day game…sigh. Dan Haren starts in Cleveland for the Angels. Anibal Sanchez will start for the Marlins in Milwaukee. Tim Lincecum takes on Jordan Zimmermann as the Giants travel to Washington. AJ Burnett starts for the Pirates as they host the Astros. Ivan Nova takes on James Shields in Tampa Bay. Roy Oswalt and the Rangers take on Chris Sale and the White Sox. Wei-Yin Chen and Felix Hernandez will duel in Seattle. Trevor Bauer makes start numero dos, and it'll be his home debut, against the Padres. Johnny Cueto takes on Chris Capuano in Los Angeles.
Enjoy your day of baseball, everyone.
