Breaking news out of Florida. Detroit Tigers DH/catcher Victor Martinez has reportedly torn his ACL, and will probably miss the entire season. Last season for the Tigers, Martinez hit .330/.380/.470 with a career low 12 homers. Martinez is in the second year of a four year, $50 million deal, and is scheduled to make $13 million in 2012.
This is obviously a huge bad break for the defending AL Central champions. The team isn’t doomed behind the plate, where All-Star Alex Avila and his .895 OPS loom. But at the DH position, Detroit has a problem. The Tigers don’t have another DH-ready player on the roster, and all of their top hitting prospects are in the lower levels of the organization.
To replace Martinez at DH, Detroit is going to need to explore the free agent market a little bit. There are a number of interesting options still out there, including former Tiger Johnny Damon, JD Drew, Raul Ibanez, and another former Tiger in Magglio Ordonez. None of these hitters are close to being a capable replacement for Martinez, but the Tigers need to do SOMETHING to replace him. What that something is, I really don’t know right now.
