The New York Yankees have placed their ace starting pitcher CC Sabathia on the 15-day DL with a groin strain. Sabathia will be out until at least the All-Star Break, Freddy Garcia will replace Sabathia in the Yankees rotation for the foreseeable future, with his first start coming on Friday against the White Sox.
This is a huge blow for the Yankees, but at the same time, it's a good thing that they're not going to be without Sabathia for long. Early reports have him missing just two starts, and getting activated after the break ends. The two starts that Sabathia will definitely miss will be Friday's start against the White Sox, and a start next Wednesday when the Yankees travel to Tampa Bay to take on the Rays. Sabathia wasn't scheduled to pitch in the Yankees series in Boston that closes out the first half of the season.
Sabathia leads the Yankees pitching staff with 105 strikeouts (no one else has more than 80), and is also third in the league with 107 innings pitched. His 3.45 ERA is half that of Garcia's (6.91), who has spent the year mostly pitching out of New York's bullpen. Only four of Garcia's 13 appearances have come as a starter this year.
In Sabathia's last start on Sunday against the Mets, he allowed five runs (though just one earned) in 5 2/3 innings, laboring and throwing 112 pitches. He got a no-decision after the Yankees rallied late to win 6-5.
