The Student Section’s Pick Six

A rather crazy college football weekend is behind us. A few games really altered the way people are projecting the rest of the season. Also, rumors have started to swirl about getting rid of a certain coach in Texas well before he really has a chance to overcome the deficiencies (lack of talent) he inherited. I guess hell has no scorn like a fanbase (and new athletic director) with no patience. Link dump!

College Football

Charlie Strong is on the hot seat? Charlie Strong is on the hot seat, I guess. Bruce Feldman has a column up, discussing the “nightmare” of it all for the Texas head coach. It isn’t looking good for Strong. Not sure how I feel about putting a coach on the hot seat this quick, but I also don’t donate millions of dollars to any university.

Spencer Hall says college football doesn’t have a true number one. Oddly enough, the team he thinks is “good enough” to be considered such is, well, um… Clemson. Yes, Dabo Swinney is finally getting the respect he deserves. Sort of.

Believe it or not, college football coaches age just like us mere mortals. Our own Matt Zemek discusses Frank Beamer in the context of the Virginia Tech coach hitting his twilight years.

People are dumb. Not all humans, but a large variety. It is rather actually easy to find out which folks are dumber than a doorknob, too. All you have to do is go in a free-laborer’s mentions. Latest example: “Sports fans” in Cardale Jones’ mentions after struggling a little bit on Saturday.

Oregon is going to continue to rotate quarterbacks. Having two quarterbacks, at least historically, usually means you have none. Also, I talked about the possibility that the Ducks are finished as an elite program. Remember, friends, read before you comment.

Podcasts are neat. Listen to The Solid Verbal, as it is well worth your time and it hits on a lot of the major stories you may have yet been able to digest.

Extra Point

Flooding is once again ravaging areas of the United States. According to some, the rain hitting South Carolina is the worst in 1,000 years. Hoping the best for the people who have had their lives altered by the flooding.

College Basketball

Rick Pitino finds himself in a pickle again. Allegations began to be hurled out on Friday involving the Louisville basketball program having a staffer using an escort service to please players. You know, if we “paid” these kids we might not have to worry about coaches resorting to “outside means” to land top prospects. Regardless, this is a long line of not great press for Pitino.

Seth Davis talks to J.D. Collins about his new officiating coordinator position. With some new rule changes in place, coupled with many hoping to make the sport more exciting, Collins has an uphill battle ahead of him. None of which are things that are his fault in any way.

C.L. Brown has a nice column posted on Anthony Barber. With “Cat” looking to have a bigger impact for North Carolina State, the team will need him to continue in his development, as his potential good play is a “need” not a “hope” going into the season.

Duke might be coming off winning a national championship, but Coach K and the bunch have a near-brand new team heading into the season. CBT’s Scott Phillips takes a quick look and ponders if the Blue Devils will become a more perimeter-oriented team for the 2015-16 season.

Jon Rothstein has a solid Q&A with Kevin Willard posted over at CBS Sports. Biggest topic touched on: Will Seton Hall be a dumpster fire this season and the idea that Willard actually likes this year’s team more than last. Coach speak!

And One

Halloween is approaching. So, naturally, find out which costumes have been the most popular over the years. In my humble opinion, I can’t believe more people haven’t taken advantage of the phenomenon that could have been ‘dressing up like Marty Jannetty‘ over the years.

About Joseph Nardone

Joseph has covered college basketball both (barely) professionally and otherwise for over five years. A Column of Enchantment for Rush The Court on Thursdays and other basketball stuff for The Student Section on other days.
