In the eleventh hour he WNBA and WNBAPA have finally agreed to terms on a new collective bargaining agreement after it was looking increasingly likely that the start of the season would be delayed.
“This marks the beginning of a bold new era for the WNBA – one made possible by the passion and dedication of the players, owners, fans, investors, partners and the entire WNBA family,” WNBA commissioner Engelbert said, via Yahoo Sports. “We remain focused on building on the unprecedented momentum around the league and preparing for our milestone 30th season, tipping off in May.”
On Wednesday, NBA commissioner Adam Silver addressed Engelbert’s future as the head of the WNBA, with many fans and players displeased with the job Engelbert has done.
“I haven’t had those discussions yet with the WNBA board. I would only say Cathy has done a fantastic job since she’s come to the WNBA…” Silver said, per Front Office Sports’ Annie Costabile.
“We obviously see the results, but I haven’t had those discussions recently with Cathy even in terms of her future plans and how long she wants to do this. She had a storied career before she came to the WNBA, the CEO of Deloitte. The results speak for themselves and I’m very happy and I know ownership is very happy with where things stand.”
The WNBA announced a new, long-term broadcasting partnership with CBS on Wednesday, and if Engelbert can continue to keep the lucrative deals coming in, there’s no reason to think her job is anything but safe.
