Earlier this season, Caitlin Clark and the Indiana Fever faced off against Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream. The Dream went on to win the game 81-76 after pulling away late.
After filing out late in the contest, Griner appeared to say “f*cking trash” after taking her seat on the bench. However, some people twisted her words, saying that Griner said “f*cking white girl,” instead, which many people assumed was targeted at Clark.
According to Awful Announcing, Griner was asked by a reporter on Sunday before the Dream faced off against the Washington Mystics what she actually said in the moment.
“I remember fouling out, being mad,” Griner said. “I really can’t remember what I said, honestly.”
After the game, the reporter broached Griner on the subject again, this time specifically asking if she might have said “f*cking white girls.”
“No,” Griner responded. “Would never say that. Like, there’s no place for that in our league. I wouldn’t say that. I was mad about the call. I know it wasn’t that because I wouldn’t use that type of language.”
Fans reacted to Griner’s statement on social media.
“No one believes the testimony of an ex-con,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“She was on video… what?” someone else said.
“Video doesn’t lie,” another person added.
Hopefully, Griner’s words will put the matter to rest for good.
