The Colorado Buffaloes are coming off an extremely successful season in which they were on the cusp of making the College Football Playoff and had the Heisman Trophy recipient in two-way phenom Travis Hunter.
However, this season has been nothing short of an abject disaster for the Buffaloes. Head coach Deion Sanders had health complications just before the season, and while it’s great to see him back on the sidelines after the scare, the on-field product for Colorado has left a lot to be desired.
The Buffs are 3-6 on the season and lost to Arizona 52-17 in their last outing. Now, it’s come out that Sanders stripped his offensive coordinator, Pat Shurmur, of his playcalling duties prior to the game.
“Colorado football coach Deion Sanders stripped play-calling duties from offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur after the Buffaloes lost at Utah Oct. 25, demoting him to quarterbacks coach before the team got beat again last week against Arizona,” Brent Schrotenboer of USA Today reported.
Fans reacted to the shocking move on social media.
“I know Eric Bienemy is somehow toxic as far as being a HC, but he always gets a job as OC and does great. Have they never seriously made him an offer? At least maybe a temp paid advisor to point someone on staff in the right direction? He will want Colorado to be prominent,” one fan wrote on Twitter.
“At some point Colorado will realize they are slowly going through the normal processes of a bad regime. Right now they are in the ‘blame the coordinators’ stage of grief,” someone else added.
It’ll be interesting to see how much longer the school gives Sanders to get the program back on track.
