The Denver Broncos are entering a new era this season, as quarterback Russell Wilson has been traded after two years with the team.
Denver drafted Oregon Ducks quarterback Bo Nix in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, and he’s expected to win the starting job over Zach Wilson and Ben DeNucci by the time the regular season begins.
The changes won’t be exclusively on the field for the Broncos, though. The team will also be making an intriguing addition to its front office staff.
The Broncos announced Thursday that David Shaw, who was the head coach of the Stanford Cardinal from 2011-22 and won a conference-record four Pac-12 Coach of the Year Awards, would be joining Denver’s front office as a senior personnel executive.
Shaw was an NFL assistant coach from 1997-2006, with his first job being an offensive quality control coach for the 1997 Philadelphia Eagles on a staff that also included current Broncos head coach Sean Payton. Shaw then went on to hold offensive assistant positions with the Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens before being hired by Jim Harbaugh as the San Diego Toreros passing game coordinator, before following Harbaugh to Stanford the next year to serve as offensive coordinator before being promoted to head coach when Harbaugh left for the San Francisco 49ers.
Since he stepped down as Stanford’s coach in 2022, Shaw had been looking to return to the NFL, per ESPN. He also interviewed for the Broncos head coaching position that wound up going to Payton.
