Dusty Baker announced his retirement from Major League Baseball on Wednesday. The longtime manager has called it a career following 26 years as a manager and a lifetime in the sport.

Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports published an exclusive story for the publication on Baker’s retirement. He posted, “Dusty Baker retires as Houston Astros manager after 26 seasons as MLB manager.” Baker put it succinctly in his announcement: “I’m gone,” he said, according to Nightengale.

Baker revealed to Nightengale that he considered retirement following the Astros’ 2022 World Series victory. But he opted to stay another year after a discussion with Bruce Bochy. That result ends up kind of funny, as Bochy and the Texas Rangers eliminated Baker and the Astros from the MLB Postseason this year. The Rangers tangled with the Astros in the ALCS, where Texas won over Houston in seven games.

So after convincing him to come back, Bochy wound up ending Baker’s managerial career.

Baker won 10 division championships as a manager, winning at least one with every team he led. Dusty led the Astros, the San Francisco Giants, the Chicago Cubs, the Cincinnati Reds, and the Washington Nationals. So you could count on him to take your team to the postseason when he was your team’s manager.

Cheers to Dusty Baker on his retirement! The MLB world was buzzing after the announcement was made.
