Jordan Love Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (10) is shown during organized team activities Tuesday, May 23, 2023 in Green Bay, Wis.

Just a half-season into his career as a starting quarterback, the Green Bay Packers may have cast doubt on Jordan Love and his future at the helm.

Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst spoke to the media on Wednesday during his media availability. While Gutekunst spoke, he left some interesting tidbits on where he and the team may view the young quarterback at this point in time.

Shockingly, as Adam Schefter of ESPN pointed out, the Packer GM was “unsure if Jordan Love is the long-term future of their franchise.” The article, written by ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, went into further detail.

Seven games into Aaron Rodgers’ first season as the Green Bay Packers starting quarterback back in 2008, they gave him a contract extension. At the same point in Jordan Love’s first season as QB1, they can’t say for sure whether he’s the long-term future of the franchise.

Love still has another year left on his deal, so it’s not paramount from a contractual situation. But they would rather it not take more than this season to know whether he’s the answer.

“I hope not,” Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst said Wednseday during his annual mediseason news conference. “I think we’ve got 10 games left. These are going to be very important 10 games.”

Gutekunst emphasized that he’s liked the way that Love and the team has responded to the challenges this season. He stressed that, as a whole, the team needs to be better and he does expect that to happen.

According to Demovsky, “Gutekunst said he has evaluated him as a first-year player” despite his status on the roster the last three seasons.

The Packers have been able to ride with, essentially, two quarterbacks across the last 30 years. Rodgers and then previously Brett Favre captained Green Bay from 1992-2022. In between, you had your occasional Matt Flynn appearances, some Seneca Wallace games, and otherwise. But QB1 was always known.

Now, it doesn’t appear that everything is set in stone. That’s a shock to the system in Green Bay, to be sure. They’ve had QB stability unlike anyone else in the NFL over the last three decades. It appears that luck could be drying out.

The NFL world had plenty to say about the shocking statement made by the Packers on Jordan Love.
