The Los Angeles Lakers struck out with UConn head coach Dan Hurley. While rumors still are circulating that ESPN’s JJ Redick is in the mix, one of the network’s most prominent insiders is pessimistic about the situation.
Brian Windhorst joined Get Up on Thursday morning. While the show highlighted Wednesday’s Game 3 of the NBA Finals, the Lakers’ coaching search was also a key point.
In short, Windhorst expects the Lakers to deal with some challenges as they move ahead in their search.

Who do you see as the next coach in LA? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/fK2l21hSPY

“The Lakers have a challenge with this hire because they’re going to have to hire a high-risk candidate,” Windhorst said. “They want to find a way to overcome their situation. They’re kind of stuck in the middle; they need some sort of change agent here.”
Windhorst went over how they could have looked for mainstays but wanted “special talents” that would go “above and beyond” the average candidate. Windhorst pointed to Hurley and Redick as examples. Obviously, they missed out on the UConn coach, but the former player-turned-ESPN analyst is still available.
The Lakers seem poised to pursue Redick, but we’re one decline away from potentially making this an even more fascinating search. Whatever the case, all the intrigue still resides in LA.
