If you’re a Philadelphia 76ers player, executive or fan, not even watching an episode of The Simpsons will let you escape from letting you know your team stinks. The 5-37 Sixers were a punchline on Sunday’s episode “Much Apu About Something.”

Homer goes to the Kwik-E-Mart to laugh at “losers” who forgot to buy parade supplies. While there, Superintendent Chalmers tries to buy sunblock but is told by Apu it will cost $30. Chalmers, outraged, tells Apu he’s “keeping the bald man down,” to which the Kwik-E-Mart clerk offers him a 76ers hat instead to wear for free. The offer frightens Chalmers, who quickly pays for the overpriced ointment.

According to the morning show on Philly’s 97.5 The Fanatic, the joke wasn’t always about the Sixers. The Simpsons writers probably changed it when the NBA was introduced to Kristaps Porzingis and the New York Knicks became sort of fun to watch.

The 76ers can relate to The Simpsons, as both are storied franchises which haven’t been watchable in recent years. Philadelphia is turning things around slowly, pulling off four wins in their last 11 games, now on pace for a 30-win season. The Sixers are awful, but they’re not tremendously awful, as they were earlier this season. Still, the joke should sting for fans of the team.
