The Pe’ahi surf break in Maui’s north shore is better known as “Jaws”, and appropriately so due to its monster waves. Additionally, the waves are even nastier right now with El Nino in effect.

On Wednesday, surfer Tom Dosland gave one of these skyscraping waves a shot, and had a result that he’s probably seen in his nightmares (minus any sharks, thankfully).

Watch Dosland free-fall from the top of a Jaws wave:

Dosland is okay — which seems pretty amazing after seeing that fall — and posted Thursday on Instagram:

The footage was captured by Davin Phelps, and Phelps described the crazy scene:

“It was just a gnarly day, too big to paddle into the sets,” says Davin. “It seemed like 90 percent of the waves out there went unridden, and there were about 50 guys out. No one had caught a wave in like 20 minutes and then Tom went for this one. Looks like he would have had it if he gave it a couple more strokes (laughs).”
