Major League Baseball announced on Tuesday that Colorado Rockies shortstop Jose Reyes has been placed on paid leave until his domestic violence case is resolved in Hawaii. Once his case is resolved, the league will make a decision on future discipline for Reyes.

Reyes is the first player suspended under MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assult and Child Abuse Policy, which was announced back in August.

Reyes was arrested in November after he got into an argument with his wife in Hawaii on Halloween night and allegedly grabbed her throat and shoved her into a sliding glass balcony door. She reportedly suffered injuries to her thigh, neck and wrist and was taken to hospital.

The MLPA says they’ll still work with Reyes to make sure his rights are followed under the new policy.

“We are closely monitoring the proceedings in Hawaii, as well as the Commissioner’s actions under the Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy,” the statement read. “If further discipline is issued, or if Mr. Reyes’ paid suspension is not resolved in a timely fashion, the Players Association will work with Mr. Reyes to ensure that all of his rights under the Policy are protected. Pursuant to the confidentiality provisions of the Policy, the Players Association will have no further comment at this time.”

Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich told the Denver Post he’s been following the policy and had limited contact with Reyes. When asked if Reyes should be allowed to practice with the Rockies, he said he’d explore that road when a decision was made.

Reyes still has three years left on his contract worth $22 million per season.
