The New York Mets’ run to the 2015 World Series was largely due to its amazing pitching staff, and no pitcher broke out more in the postseason than Matt Harvey. The right-hander was all slated to be the Opening Day starter, but now that appears to be in jeopardy.

Exactly why, well, that remains a mystery as the Mets are only saying it is a non-baseball medical issue.

It was apparently serious enough for the 23-year-old flamethrower to miss Monday’s scheduled and final spring training appearance. However, what happened after announcing the scratched appearance is where things get strange.

The excuse first given was that Harvey missed for a “non-orthopedic doctors appointment,” but beyond that not much was revealed.

All Mets general manager Sandy Alderson would say is that there were further tests needed, and they would proceed following those results.

“It (the medical issue) came up this morning as far as I know. There will be some follow-up tests and consultation that will take place over the next couple of days.”

There was no sense of the gravity to what is going on with Harvey, as Alderson stated in his talk with the media on Monday.

“I think it’s a little early to attach any level of concern. … I think we need to wait for more medical information before we decide it’s of concern, or great concern, or no concern.”

Little clue into what is happening means minds could be running wild, but clearly whatever it is is serious enough for the organization, and Harvey, to want to get tests and results back before discussing it publicly.

Depending on those results, the Mets and Harvey will have a better idea on his status as the starter for Opening Day next week.
