Bartolo Colon has gone deep. This is not a drill.
In the second inning of Saturday’s New York Mets-San Diego Padres game, facing James Shields, the 42-year-old launched a ball out of the park for his first career home run. The shot gave the Mets 4-0 lead.
Mets announcer Gary Cohen used Vin Scully’s famous line “the impossible has happened,” as Colon slowly rounded the bases as Mets fans showered him with cheers. Colon’s Mets teammates all have a good, surprising laugh at the unlikely hit. Like us, they’re amazed with what just happened.
Bartolo Colon has been a very good pitcher for his almost 20-year major league career, but as a batter, he’s struggled. Colon is often caught in compromising positions at the plate, as the career .096 hitter isn’t what you’d call a natural hitter. The home run might be the most unlikely hit of the entire baseball season as Colon never went deep in his big league career and only had two career extra base hits.
It’s a great moment for Colon and fans alike. He gets his first career home run after almost 20 seasons in the big leagues. As fans, we experience something that seemed to be impossible.
Congrats Bartolo, you deserve it.
