We’ve been preparing for this moment for a few weeks now, but the day has finally come when jersey ads have made it to the big four North American professional sports.  And the Philadelphia 76ers are the first to take the plunge in a partnership with StubHub.

On Monday morning, ESPN’s Darren Rovell reported the first jersey sponsorship in the NBA, with the Sixers set to make a cool $5 million per year for three years.  And for fans who hate the idea of advertising space coming to their sacred sports jerseys, you still have one more year before it becomes a reality.  The StubHub deal starts in the 2017-2018 season.

Here’s the pictures of what the jerseys will like, with the StubHub logo on the upper corner of the jersey.

In truth, (please take a deep breath before responding to this with angry comments below) the jersey sponsorship here really doesn’t look all that bad.  In fact, dare I say that it looks classy.  (I said breathe!)  If the NBA was going to ad sponsorships to their jerseys, this is just about the best case scenario for what it looks like.  It’s small, it’s relatively out of the way, and after a while I’m willing to bet that NBA fans won’t even notice it.

And for all the fans who are anxious about these jersey sponsorships becoming the next big thing, it’s really not all that bad.  It’s been happening in soccer for years now and it hasn’t hurt the beautiful game.  Jersey sponsorships are all over international sports and have even made it to the WNBA.  And this could have been much worse, the StubHub logo is nowhere near as intrusive as some of the WNBA jersey ads.

The Sixers may be the first team to make their sponsorship official, but they certainly won’t be the last.  By the time the 2017-2018 season rolls around, I’d be shocked if there was one NBA team who didn’t have a deal in place.  It just makes too much sense for the teams and the league because it’s a new source of revenue that they didn’t have before.  And if there’s one thing we know is true about sports teams, they love their money.  Now it’s not like the Sixers can put this cash towards spending on new players or anything, but it will definitely help their bottom line.
