One of the most anticipated bowl games of the season will probably take place without its biggest star as TCU quarterback Trevone Boykin was arrested early Thursday morning after reportedly assaulting a police officer in the spill out after a bar fight in San Antonio. The Horned Frogs are set to play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Saturday (Jan. 2).

Boykin was also charged with resisting arrest and public intoxication. From news4sanantonio.com:

TCU’s Trevone Boykin has been arrested in San Antonio, two days before the Horned Frogs face Oregon in the Alamo Bowl.

San Antonio police say the quarterback was arrested following a fight at Pat O’Brien’s located on 242 Losoya Street. Boykin was accused of indiscriminately hitting a patrol officer around 1:52 a.m Thursday morning.

Police say the trouble began when bar patrons recognized the player and exchanged words. They say an upset Boykin allegedly took a swing, missed, and made contact with a bar employee instead.

The report indicates that the fight spilled outside at which point police officers on bicycles arrived. Boykin, “indiscriminately” hit one of the officers but after being threatened with a taser, Boykin reportedly calmed down.

TCU issued the following response to the situation, “We are aware of a situation last night and are gathering information. We will continue to closely monitor this and evaluate additional details as they become available.”

TCU v Baylor

There is merit to traveling to a bowl venue in advance, and teams that get invited have certain in-town responsibilities throughout the week leading up to the game, but this type of thing seems to happen too often when teams and players have extra time in a city with no game to play for days. TCU’s campus is just over four hours from San Antonio, too far to commute but close enough to wonder if TCU wishes they had stayed home until just before the game.

And speaking of the Alamo Bowl, it will be hard to believe the 11th-ranked Horned Frogs will have their star quarterback in the game against 15th-ranked Oregon. Still, a lot can happen in three days. Clearly.
