Mark Sanchez really, really wants to start for the Denver Broncos.
Sanchez, who was acquired by Denver in a trade from the Philadelphia Eagles in March for a draft pick, told Troy Renck of the Denver Post that he’ll compete his butt off to become the next starter for the Broncos:
“I don’t care who’s there. They are going to give me a fair shake. And if it’s a fair shot, I will bet on myself,” Sanchez said. “I will compete my butt off and be friendly and professional with whoever’s there. But I want this so bad. Since I was a little kid, I have been dreaming about a chance to win a Super Bowl.”
That’s a great attitude, but the Broncos likely hope to enter the 2016 season with a better quarterback number one on their depth chart. It’s why they tried so hard to acquire Colin Kaepernick from the 49ers. Sanchez is a very good second option, but not much more than that.
The 29-year-old hasn’t started consistently since 2012. He appeared in four games with Philadelphia in 2015, throwing four touchdowns and four interceptions, with a quarterback rating of 80.7. However, the Broncos may not need great production out of the quarterback position, given their tremendous defense. After all, they just won the Super Bowl with Peyton Manning having the worst quarterback rating (67.9) of any starting quarterback in the league.
Sanchez told Renck that there wasn’t anything more important in his life than the opportunity to start with the Broncos:
“Coming to the Denver Broncos, this is a gift-wrapped opportunity. I believe in fate and destiny,” Sanchez told the Denver Post. “There’s no excuse. I need to take full advantage. There’s nothing more important in my life than this.”
Well, there you have it. It’s destiny. It might be hyperbolic of Sanchez to say there’s nothing more important in his life, but he’s fighting for a great opportunity to turn his career around. It’s hard to blame him for his hopefulness.
