Johnny Football

Things are getting even worse for Johnny Manziel, as it appears that Nike is considering dropping the quarterback from its brand.

TMZ reports that a reputable source at Nike said, “We are worried about him and hope things will turn around in the right direction… but we are on the fence if [our relationship] will continue.”

Manziel was recently dropped from LeBron James’ marketing agency, a huge statement considering it appeared that the two athletes had a great relationship. Although LeBron said that he is concerned for Manziel and that the move was strictly business.

LeBron told reporters the following concerning Manziel, via Cleveland.com’s Joe Vardon:

“I think it’s more concern for him individually. And I’m not quite sure, I don’t know all the details on it, I really kind of even haven’t been all up on it, but I’ve heard a little bit of it and it’s just a distraction for not only himself but for everyone that’s around him, including family, people that represent him, the people around him. And he’ll figure it out at some point, we all hope.”

Amid the reports that Manziel went to Las Vegas dressed up in a blonde wig, LeBron said, “I don’t go to Vegas much, but when I do, I’m myself.”

A person of LeBron James’ influence may certainly have led Nike to really begin to consider dropping Manziel, considering he is their most valuable asset. Although he has certainly done enough with or without the influence from LeBron to lose his Nike sponsorship.

Manziel’s tenure in Cleveland has been mostly controversial, but it appears he hasn’t been able to kick bad habits, especially as of late.

He was accused of striking his girlfriend in an argument on the way home from a bar back in October. His girlfriend, Colleen Crowley told police that Manziel shoved her head against the glass of the car prior to getting into it, and hit her a couple of times in the vehicle. She told police that she did not think Manziel could cause her physical harm. The police let the two go and did not make an arrest.

Manziel was benched by the Browns a month later after a video of him surfaced that showed him partying at a club during the team’s bye week.

While it’s not certain whether or not Manziel will get his act together, a loss of representation from LeBron James, and potentially Nike, should be a huge wake-up call no matter who you are.
