Sometimes headlines can be misleading. This is one of those occasions. Adam Schefter reported today that the Rams have discussed internally about bringing Peyton Manning to LA for next season. This brings up two other legendary Quarterbacks who ended their careers in southern California. But while both Johnny Unitas and Joe Namath finished their legendary careers with the Chargers and Rams respectively, both were not coming off potentially winning a Super Bowl with their previous team.
Reports have emerged this week that Peyton Manning has already told close friends that he’s retiring after Super Bowl 50 win or lose, but at least the Rams have thrown their name in the hat in the event and he doesn’t so, they can say “at least we tried.” Manning has one year left on his current deal with the Broncos, for what little it may be worth.
For the Rams, this is probably more of a marketing decision than a football decision. After moving to Los Angeles, the Rams are looking to sell tickets to a new market and getting one of the best quarterbacks in history to play in what would very likely be the final season of his career, has to be of some interest to the Rams front office.
Jeff Fisher has declared Case Keenum his starter heading into the offseason with competition being provided by Sean Mannion and Nick Foles, which doesn’t really inspire all that much confidence. Would Peyton Manning at 40 be better than any of those three QB’s with bum feet and no discernible arm strength left? Tough question that even Jeff Fisher, QB whisperer, probably knows the answer to.
