Alabama Crimson Tide basketball player Darius Miles has been charged with capital murder following the death of a woman early Sunday.

AL.com reports that the 23-year-old woman was riding in a car when she was shot around 1:45 a.m. in Tuscaloosa less than a quarter-mile from the university’s football stadium. The car continued driving and found a University of Alabama police officer to assist.

According to the report, police found multiple witnesses to the incident. Miles was taken into custody Sunday afternoon. Police also arrested 20-year-old Michael Lynn Davis and charged him with capital murder. Authorities told reporters he is not affiliated with the University of Alabama.

The University of Alabama issued a statement Sunday evening on Miles’ arrest.

“We are grieved by the incident that occurred near campus last night and extend our deepest condolences to the victim’s family and friends,” the statement read. “We are grateful for the quick and thorough response of law enforcement and emergency response teams.

“We were made aware of the recent charge made against student-athlete Darius Miles; he has been removed from the campus and is no longer a member of the Alabama men’s basketball team.”

Miles, a 6-6 junior from Washington, D.C., averaged 1.5 points and rebounds per game this season for the Crimson Tide. He had not played since Dec. 20 because of injury, and Alabama announced on Saturday he would miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury.
