Antoine Davis Detroit Mercy guard Antoine Davis (0) celebrates a play against Oakland with guard Jamail Pink (10) during the first half at the O’rena in Rochester on Friday, Feb. 17, 2023.

Detroit Mercy Titans star Antoine Davis will finish his career just three points shy of “Pistol” Pete Maravich for the NCAA’s all-time scoring record after his team was not given an invite to a postseason tournament. And he’s not happy about it.

Initially, it appeared that the CBI Tournament was considering inviting Detroit Mercy into its field to allow Davis to chase the record even though the team finished the season with just a 14-19 record. But ultimately, the tournament decided not to give the team an invitation, and Davis is upset, believing that the decision came after pressure from those who didn’t want to see him break the record.

“I’m upset about it,” Davis said in a phone interview with The Associated Press. “I feel like I got cheated out of something that they can’t ever give back to me. I think it’s selfish — and weird — that people emailed or called the CBI to say we shouldn’t be in the tournament because they didn’t want me to break the record.

“But there’s nothing to hold my head down about. I still feel like I’m the best scorer in my generation, especially finishing No. 2 behind him.”

It’s worth noting that Maravich set his all-time record in just 88 games throughout his three seasons at LSU, and before the introduction of the three-point line. Davis, meanwhile, reached his point total in 144 games throughout five full seasons, getting an extra year of eligibility due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

So even if Davis had broken Maravich’s record, their points-per-game totals were not remotely comparable.
