Former Auburn Tigers head coach, who led his team to the Final Four last season, has been under fire from fans and media members for much of the college basketball season.

Pearl is now an analyst, although his son, Steven, has taken over as the Tigers’ head coach. Throughout the season, Pearl has found himself repeatedly advocating for his son’s team to make the NCAA Tournament, despite having middling success in the SEC, and often at the expense of programs such as Miami (OH), which ended the season as the last remaining unbeaten team in men’s Division I.

Ultimately, Pearl’s feelings on the matter didn’t matter, as Auburn missed the tournament and settled for the NIT, while the RedHawks open tournament play on Wednesday night against the SMU Mustangs.

On Tuesday, NBA legend Charles Barkley was on the call for one of the First Four games of the tournament, and when Pearl asked him a question from the broadcast studio, Barkley completely ignored him and talked about how people were looking for Pearl, so he intended to keep his distance.

Fans reacted to the exchange on social media.

“Bruce Pearl is terrible at this. Could they not get a better studio guy than him? Maybe this is what Mark DeRosa should’ve been doing instead of managing Team USA,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Chuck ignoring bruce pearl is the basketball equivalent of leaving someone on read in front of millions,” someone else added.

“CBS/TNT like giving a shot to a former coach and player who they think is “hot” at the moment. Pearl will be one-and-done,” another fan predicted.

It’ll be interesting to see if Pearl is brought back next season as a college basketball analyst after all of the noise surrounding him this season.
