It will come as a surprise to very few people, but Georgetown University fired Patrick Ewing as head coach of its men’s basketball program on Thursday.
While he was a phenom with the Hoyas as a player, leading them to their only national championship in 1984, Ewing’s stint as head coach has been an epic disaster.
The Hoyas finished this season 7-25 overall and 2-18 in the Big East, a far cry from the days of John Thompson. This also comes a year after Ewing’s Georgetown team finished 6-25 overall and 0-19 in the conference.
Jon Rothstein was the first to announce the news.

Ewing came back to Georgetown in the hopes of returning them to the glory days of the 1980s. However, he leaves the program in much worse shape than how he found it.
It was only a matter of time before the school finally decided to pay his buyout and move on. But plenty of people around college football were disappointed to see how the era ended.
“It was inevitable. But I feel terrible for Patrick. No win situation” said Adam Schein.
Georgetown made the official announcement soon after the news broke. Ewing included a statement of his own, saying “I wish the program nothing but success. I will always be a Hoya.”
