Before the Iowa Hawkeyes and LSU Tigers tipped off in the 2023 Women’s National Championship Game on Sunday, there was some confusion over the playing of the national anthem.
When the national anthem began, the Iowa Hawkeyes were on the court but the LSU Tigers were nowhere to be found.
It’s unclear why Kim Mulkey’s club wasn’t out on the floor beforehand.

Naturally, this drummed up a lot of drama and concern on social media given how there have been protests during the national anthem in the past. However, it seems pretty unlikely that Kim Mulkey would allow her team to purposefully miss the playing of the anthem, given her other stances.
That didn’t stop Twitter from freaking out over the fact that the Tigers were not present during the playing of the song.
“Why is Iowa on the court for the National Anthem but LSU isn’t?” asked Big Game Boomer.
“I’m hearing LSU wasn’t on the floor for the national anthem??? Okay Iowa, kill them,” said Big Red Korner.
“Anyone writing about how LSU wasn’t on the floor for the anthem? Bc a couple of years ago…nvm,” said Rachel Mobley.
“#LSU fan was upset the team wasn’t on the floor for the National Anthem. Will now cheer for #Iowa,” noted Message Board Geniuses.

We have a feeling there’s going to be a pretty normal explanation for why LSU wasn’t on the court for the anthem.
