Mikey Williams, a five-star recruit committed to the Memphis Tigers, was reportedly arrested Thursday on multiple felony charges in his native San Diego.
According to multiple reports, Williams was arrested on five felony counts of assault with a firearm. He was released on $50,000 bail early Friday.
The University of Memphis issued a statement Friday morning: “We are aware of the situation and are gathering more information.”
No details were available on what led to the arrest, although LocalMemphis.com reports Williams was arrested in the 2600 block of Bratton Valley Road in Jamul, California.
Each charge Williams faces carries a minimum sentence of six months in county jail, if convicted. He is expected to make his first court appearance on April 20.
The 6-2 Williams, who played for San Ysidro High School, is the No. 26 ranked recruit and No. 12 guard in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports.com. Beyond his on-court skills, he’s also become a social media influencer, with millions of followers on Instagram. According to the Memphis Commercial-Appeal, his Instagram account was deactivated Friday morning.
On3.com reports that his name, image and likeness (NIL) value is worth an estimated $3.3 million.
Williams signed with Memphis and head coach Penny Hardaway in November 2022. The Tigers have the No. 7 ranked recruiting class this year, according to 247 Sports.
