The Miami RedHawks men’s basketball team has been the feel-good story of this college basketball season. The RedHawks, ranked 23rd in the AP Poll and led by head coach Travis Steele, stand with top-ranked Arizona Wildcats as the country’s last remaining unbeaten team.
Steele’s unit even had its upcoming game against the Ohio Bobcats on Friday February, 13, flexed from ESPN+ to ESPN. While the men’s team has received most of the national attention amid its 24-0 start, Miami’s women’s team is having a special season as well.
The women’s team, led by head coach Glenn Box, is undefeated in conference play at 10-0 and defeated Georgia Southern on Saturday, improving to 19-4 on the season. Box spoke earlier in the week about the impact this season’s success is having on recruiting.
“People are attracted to winners and positive things, and I think our program has exhibited a lot of positives,” Box said, via Margo Rutledge Kissell.
The head coach is extremely proud of how his unit is improving and the growth he’s seen around him.
“I get almost as much satisfaction from winning as seeing individuals around me improving,” said Box, who described himself as a competitor and a teacher. It’s fun to watch people challenge themselves in ways they didn’t think that they could.”
Sophomore forward Ilse de Vries from the Netherlands is crediting the team’s closeness for their on-court success this season.
“We’re working really hard on the court, and every win that we’re having is not enough for us,” she said. “I mean, we’re always striving for more, so we’re just going game by game. I think that’s a really big part of why we’re winning.”
If the RedHawks can keep up teh treat season, national media might be forced to give them the attention they deserve, just like the men’s squad.
